In October, we were delighted to welcome speaker Gordon McCorkindale representing Kidney Kids, Scotland to the club.
He spoke eloquently and passionately about the plight of children who are required to have regular dialysis which can involve them in long, tiring journeys, twice a week to the few hospitals in Scotland with the necessary equipment.
Gordon is on a quest to raise funds to buy a number of the latest 'portable' versions of dialysis machines, although these are still very expensive. But placing just one machine in the various small communities across Scotland can make such a difference to the children. Dialysis can be performed overnight, manged by parents, and the children can carry on their daytime schooling unaffected.
Other excellent initiatives included cartoon style books to teach the children about their condition, and how to deal with it, without causing upset.
All in all, the club members were very impressed by the initiatives and hope to support Kidney Kids Scotland in the future.
